Sneaker Reps in 2026: What Actually Separates Good From Bad

2026-10-21 3 min read

Most sneaker comparisons focus on details that barely matter and skip the ones that decide whether a pair looks right on foot. After looking at a lot of pairs, the differences that actually show up fall into four categories.

1. Last shape — the thing you cannot fix

A shoe's last is the foot-shaped form it is built around. Get the last wrong and no amount of detail work saves it: the toe is too blunt or too pointed, the heel leans in or out, the collar sits too high.

How to check: put the shoe on a table and look at it from directly above. The toe should taper in a smooth curve to a definite tip. Then look from the side: the height of the toe box relative to the collar should match the reference.

This is the single most useful check, and the one most buyers skip because it requires a comparison image.

2. Material — thickness, grain and temper

Two pairs can use "leather" and feel completely different.

Suede is judged differently: nap should be short and even, and brushing it with a finger should leave a mark that recovers.

3. Sole moulding

The outsole is a single moulding, and moulding quality is easy to see.

Look at the edges of the tread blocks — they should be sharp, not rounded. Look at the sidewall for flow lines or flash (thin plastic fins at the mould split). Check that the sole sits flat: rock it on a table and watch for wobble.

Midsole paint is a separate issue. Painted midsoles should have clean masking lines with no overspray on the upper.

4. Panel construction

How the upper is assembled tells you how much labour went in.

Model-specific notes

Air Jordan 1

The toe box is the usual weak point — it should be low and slightly slanted, not domed. Check the wings logo position: it should sit just above the collar curve, angled to follow it. The swoosh should taper, not stay constant width.

Air Jordan 4

The netting panels are the giveaway. Good netting is taut with a clean rectangular grid; poor netting sags or has irregular openings. Check the height of the tongue — it should stand proud without flopping forward.

Nike Dunk

The panel proportions matter more than details here. Compare the height of the heel counter and the angle of the swoosh. The toe box should be relatively flat. Stitch lines around the swoosh should be a consistent distance from the edge.

Yeezy

Knit density is everything. Good knit has an even, dense weave with no thin patches; hold it up to light and look for inconsistent transparency. The midsole should be smooth with no visible seams, and the heel should have a defined curve rather than a flat back.

What to ignore

A practical routine

When a pair arrives, do this in order:

  1. Table-top silhouette from above and from the side — compare to reference.
  2. Press the toe box and the ankle collar — check material temper.
  3. Rock it on a flat surface — check sole flatness.
  4. Follow one long seam end to end — check stitch consistency.
  5. Look at the sole edge under raking light — check moulding sharpness.

Two minutes, five checks, and you know what you have.

If you are comparing silhouettes, grouping by model makes the differences obvious: Air Jordan, Nike, Yeezy and New Balance pages each hold references of the same family, which is far more useful than judging a single pair in isolation.
